Using the Visual Lexicon

The heart of the Visual Lexicon is a series of visual annotations keyed to words and phrases in specific texts. To use this feature of the Visual Lexicon, select which section of the Bible you want to investigate from the sidebar menu and navigate to the appropriate book and chapter. Once you have located the chapter you want to investigate, simply click on any highlighted word or phrase to see associated visual resources!

Layout of the Visual Lexicon

The Visual Lexicon is ecumenical in scope and design. The Hebrew Bible/Protestant Old Testament is presented in the order and groupings found within the Jewish canon. The Visual Lexicon also treats the Deuterocanonical books accepted as part of the Old Testament by Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christians. For more information about the organization and groupings of the Visual Lexicon, visit the individual section home pages by using the navigational menu in the sidebar!

Visual Lexicon Concordance

Under Construction — The Visual Lexicon Concordance. This feature will allow a reader to search for key words and see the full breadth of visual resources associated with that term rather than the specific images selected to accompany specific texts. The Concordance will also contain more detailed information and bibliographies for the associated topics.

Visual Lexicon Encyclopedia

Under Construction — The Visual Lexicon Encyclopedia. This feature will allow a reader to search for broader semantic domains of related terms and images, such as “warfare” or “home life.” The individual pages for entries in the Encyclopedia will aggregate related images from a variety of contexts and combine them with more in-depth discussion and bibliographies.
