Sapelo Island

students on a truck

The IFP begins in early June and spends several days of classroom and field instruction at the UGA Marine Institute on Sapelo Island, GeorgiaThis time allows students to get acclimated with the scheduling as well as getting a glimpse of what this program is all about (it's an IFP Bootcamp!).

Poverty Point

Poverty Point State Historical Site is a prehistoric earthwork constructed by the Poverty Point culture. Students get to learn about those who inhabited poverty point as well as try out old tools and weapons once used by the Poverty Point culture.

Permian Basin Petroleum Museum

Old Petrolium machine

Students get to learn the history of oil as well as its effects on society and different cultures.

Guadelupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns

Guadalupe Mountains

This marks our very first "big" hike on IFP. The Guadelupe Mountains hike is an approximately 8-mile hike through hot desert temperatures. Although quite challenging, this is one of the most rewarding hikes. Later, students get to travel over 500 miles below the ground and into Carlsbad Caverns.

Bandelier Monument, Chaco hike, Mesa Verde

Bandelier Monumnet

As we continue our journey, we hit many other cultural areas such as Bandelier, Chaco, and Mesa Verde. After a day spent in Mesa Verde, students take a quick 2-mile hike up a mountain at the campsite and view a beautiful Colorado sunset.

Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon

IFP wouldn't be IFP without our Grand Canyon hike. Students get to scale this popular canyon while completing a geology project.

Zion National Park

A fan favorite. On one of our days off, students are able to travel through Zion and choose between a few hikes to complete such as Angel's Landing and the Narrows.

Death Valley

A student in Death Valley

Ever wanted to see what one of the hottest areas in the world felt like? Well, in IFP, we get to do exactly that.

Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest and Mono Lake

Ancient Bristolecone Pine Forest

During these stops, students get to hike through a forest with one of the world's oldest trees, the Bristlecone Pine. Afterwards, students get the chance to float in Mono Lake.

Muir Woods

Ever wanted to see giant Redwoods? At Muir Woods, students get the chance to walk through a beautiful Redwood forest and spot banana slugs.

Yosemite and Lava Beds

Yosemite National Park

Hike through Yosemite and see for yourself what all of the talk is about. After, travel to the Lava Beds and venture through dark caves.

Crater Lake and Mount St Helens

Students sleeping on Mount St. Helens

These two spots are popular ones on IFP. First, take a jump into Crater lake, one of the bluest lakes you will ever see! Next, take a hike up Mount St. Helens. IFP has been preparing you for this moment every since your first hike in the Guadalupe Islands. The reward is unimaginable once you have reached the top of this volcano (be sure to try and spot the steam coming up from it!).

Olympic National Park

A crazy looking tree

Never been to Washington? We will spend plenty of time in this beautiful state hiking through temporal rainforests as well as sandy beaches.

Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park

The hike in Glacier is absolutely breathtaking! You may be stepping on things from rocks to water, and even snow!

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone national Park

Another classic stop, students get to explore Yellowstone and its incredible geysers. If lucky, some amazing wildlife may also be spotted here.

The Grand Tetons

Students standing on a rock surrounded by water

This is our very last major hike on IFP, and in most students' opinions, the most beautiful. Students get an entire day to hike through the Grand Tetons and get the opportunity to jump into a lake at the top (although we must warn you, there is always snow at the top).

Dinosaur National Monument and day off in Denver

Students in a vehicle

Students will complete their very last academic project while scaling the desert mountains near Dinosaur National Park. Afterward, we travel to Denver for our last day off as well as celebrating our journey by holding an official IFProm at the campsite.

Columbia, MO

This is our trip's very last campsite before driving back to Atlanta. Students pile into tents together, realizing it will be their very last night together.
